Essay - Mr Bush

The film clip I chose to analyse was from a movie called "coach carter". The reason I chose this movie is because, it is about a group of poor and un-wealthy teenagers brought up in a bad neighbourhood. When this film clip first starts of, it shows a close up of a mans head from a low angle looking up at his head. from this we could tell that maybe he is a dominant character in the movie. When he goes into the basketball court straight after the close up, it shows a long shot of the basketball team, however the camera is at a high angle looking down at the team, this shows that the man is much more dominant than them. as the film clip goes on the teenagers start saying how he is right and they should respect him more and when the boy gets up out of his seat to say something to the man, the camera angle has a close-up of his face but the angle was a mid-shot which connotes that he is on the same level as the man. After the speech, there is a close-up shot of some of the other boys in basketball squad and the camera is looking up at them symbolising that they can be more dominant than they are. The last shot is a long shot of the camera looking down at all of them. This could connote that because most of them are not white, they are not as dominant as white people. however this could also connote that they are all as equal as each other. Throughout the whole of this film clip, straight cutting is used.

Throughout this whole film clip, lighting stays the same. it is shows the sun reflecting from the window. this adds an effect the the scene because it could connote that these boys are becoming more dominant, the reason I think this is because this movie is about a group of boys brought up in a bad neighbourhood and have been set the wrong example, and finding them doing work in a basketball court could mean that these kids are changing. however, throughout the whole film clip there is a consistency of "dark" lighting, this could connote their lifestyle because they are a bunch of bad boys brought up wrong and by showing dark lighting throughout the film clip could help the audience understand the movie and more about the characters.

Sound in this film clip is used very effectivally. throughout the whole clip, very emotional music is being played. this relates to the film clip because in the scene, the boys are talking about how they are going to listen more to their coach rather then ignore him and do what they want to do. it is a very emotional scene. This is called parallel sound. Parallel sound is when a piece of sound is being played that is related to the theme going on and this is what is happening in this scene. I think that the sound is very important to this film clip because it helps us relate to the characters and there background as they have been through a lot of emotional things in the past and by playing the music throughout the whole scene helps us both understand the characters more and feel their emotions and what they are going through.

The setting in this film clip is very effective. the reason I think this is because everything was in place and it helped  me understand the scene much more. The costume in this film clip also had a big impact on the scene because they were wearing "chavy" and "poor" clothes. This connoted the characters that they are from a poor neighbourhood and it shows how they have been brought up. from the facial expressions of the characters you can tell that they had been through a lot of emotional things in the past. this has a very big effect on the movie because it helps us understand the scene and the characters. We can tell a lot about the characters from their body language. They are sitting on a chair in an un-formal way because they are "slouching" on the chair with their hoods up as if they don't care about life or they just don't take it seriously.
